Tractor-trailer hauling sweet potatoes catches fire on westbound I-4 in Lakeland

Emergency crews have extinguished a truck fire in Polk County.

LAKELAND, Fla. -- A tractor-trailer hauling sweet potatoes caught fire Monday morning on westbound I-4 near Exit 33 in Lakeland.

A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson said there was no crash. Instead, the fire started when the truck suffered a mechanical issue. The 62-year-old Orlando driver pulled onto the emergency shoulder, as his truck became engulfed in flames. He managed to escape without injuries, and nobody else was hurt.

Firefighters have put out the flames.

Authorities have reopened two westbound lanes on I-4, but drivers are still seeing delays.
