Tampa, FL - "One time, I was texting and I looked up and almost hit a car," said Robby Ackles, 17, of Tampa.

Ackles is one of thousands of teen drivers who admit to texting and driving, like Shirley Vogler, 18, who said, "We know it is bad, but we do it anyways."

And that is coming from kids who know the numbers! "You're 23 times more likely to crash while texting," said Vogler.

It is statistics like that one that have state lawmakers steering toward a bill (HB 41) that bans texting while driving.

For mother Tina Sink, that law could not come quick enough. "It is a must," she said.

Even if the bill passes, the ban on texting and driving won't go into effect for another six months, which is why a Bay area organization is taking matters into its own hands right now.

"Allstate, 93.3 FLZ and More Health, we have launched a contest," said Karen Pesce, executive director of local educational non-profit More Health.

The contest was created to keep kids safe on the roads. "Texting and driving kills 11 teens each day," said Pesce.

Pesce and More Health is the driving force behind this brand new Bay area-wide battle.

"The kids sign a pledge saying they agree to not text and drive. Then, the school with the greatest percent of signed pledges will win a private concert at their high school from the local rock band 'We The Kings'," explained Pesce.

Bay area teenagers seem to dig the idea. "They're trying to get kids to stop and, I mean, you got the band too, which is a good incentive," said Katie Sink, 16. She wants her school, Plant High School, to win.

So, Sink already pledged and her friends say they will too.

"Yes, definitely," said Vogler.

"Yes, I would pledge," said Ackles.

The contest truly is a win-win, because with every pledge, the hope is that kid keeps his or her promise.

Commercials just hit the radio airwaves over the weekend. More Health, Inc. says Bay area principals at high schools in all six counties will get word on contest details on Monday.
