The story started six years ago, when a familiar face stopped by his shop, “A lady came into my store, standing in my doorway, and she says to me, do you remember me? 'Well let me guess. I did your wedding cake.' You did my wedding 18 months ago and your wedding cake was the best part of my marriage,” Bach says with laughter. So he baked for her what she insisted in sharing with the bridesmaids from her wedding, a divorce cake. It was a slice of heaven in the midst of a matrimonial hell.
“I think it's a healthy thing. You have to go with the end of something bad and the beginning of something good. That's probably cause for celebration,” says the 64-year-old.
Bach has made about five in all. All but one with a groom pinned at the bottom of the cake to reflect the marriage falling on top of the person that the other feels is at fault. The bride got pinned in the other.
Bach gets on average about $185 per cake. His wedding cakes go for much more. Besides for him, those are much sweeter.
