LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A man was standing in the lobby of the police station saying he had a rocket. He was right.
According to the Lake City Police Department, on Sunday just before noon a man told police he was driving on Labonte Lane near Brady Circle on the west side of town when he saw what appeared to be a rocket in the grass.
Officers determined it was indeed a live, high-explosive military device. Explosives experts from Alachua County responded and identified the device as an M247 rocket with 2.3 pounds of composition B for the explosive.
Having no means of transporting the rocket, the Alachua County team called in a team from Mayport, then set up a perimeter for safety that led to the closure of Main Boulevard for about two hours.
The Navy team took the rocket to a nearby shooting range for safe disposal. It is unclear how the rocket came to be on the side of a city road remains.
Anyone with information is asked to call the TIP line at 386-719-2068. It is an anonymous call.
Police also remind everyone not to approach any suspicious devices, and to call police immediately.
