ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A St. Petersburg man was arrested for murder after authorities learned he stabbed his girlfriend multiple times, according to deputies.
On Wednesday, 53-year-old Rifet Redzic was arrested after the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office say they discovered he killed his girlfriend and attempted to cover it up as a suicide.
According to the sheriff's office, their team responded to reports of a suicide on Saturday near 62nd Avenue North and 28th Street North in Unincorporated St. Petersburg. The caller told authorities that 50-year-old Nafa Secic stabbed and killed herself.
Deputies say when they arrived, they did find Secic's dead body in her bedroom with stab wounds to her chest and abdomen.
While on scene, investigators spoke with Redzic who said he saw Secic go to the kitchen and grab a knife before returning to their bedroom where she began stabbing herself. He told them he tried to stop her, but was unsuccessful.
Detectives say Redzic gave several inconsistent statements about what happened.
Later, they found an additional stab wound on Secic's back. Redzic eventually admitted to stabbing her in the back, but maintained the other stab wounds were self-inflicted.
The sheriff's office investigation later revealed that Redzic stabbed his girlfriend multiple times, and the wounds were not self-inflicted.
Detectives charged Redzic with one count of first-degree murder. He was transported to the Pinellas County Jail.
The investigation into what happened is still ongoing.
