Female teacher suspended over allegations of sex with a student

An Escambia High School teacher is suspended following allegations that she had sexual activity with a 15-year-old male student.
The student's mother, whose name is being withheld to protect her son's identity, said she alerted the Escambia County School District and the Escambia County Sheriff's Office after finding sexually explicit text messages on her son's phone dating back to October.She said her son admitted to kissing and inappropriate behavior with the teacher between classes and to engaging in sexual activity with her in Baldwin County, just across the state line.The Escambia County Sheriff's Office referred the case to Baldwin authorities on Tuesday because the contact is believed to have occurred in the Lillian area, Baldwin sheriff's Maj. Anthony Lowery said. The student lives in that area, he said.Based on the information Baldwin officers have received, a felony charge of sodomy in the second degree is possible, Lowery said.Veazey, who has worked for the Escambia County School District since Aug. 12, 2008, has not been arrested. She could not be reached for comment.She was suspended with pay beginning on Friday, said Alan Scott, superintendent of human resources for the School District. He would not confirm the reason for her suspension.Scott said cases of sexual misconduct are referred to law enforcement and to Children and Families. Janice Thomas, administrator for the local Children and Families circuit, confirmed that the agency is investigating.School Board Chairman Gerald Boone, whose district includes Escambia High, said it was quot;highly disappointing to hear about this happening again in our School District.quot;quot;There's a line between relationships of teachers and students, and you just don't cross that line,quot; he said.The School District has offered to pay for counseling sessions for the boy at Baptist Health Care's Lakeview Center.quot;Right now, it's extremely heart wrenching,quot; the mother said. quot;Right now, I'm very worried about him. The school is offering counseling, but it's not for three or four more weeks, and he is having to deal with this now. He doesn't want to talk to me about it.quot;In 2006, another Escambia High School teacher, Janelle Bird, was convicted of unlawful sexual activity and committing lascivious acts after engaging in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student. She was sentenced to two years in prison.Last August, two Jay High School teachers mdash; Ashley Burkett, 31, and April Watson, 33 mdash; were charged with having sex with underage students in 2007.
