'Horrifying': Hillsborough sheriff says man tried to run over deputies with his car

The man was fleeing the scene of a burglary when he intentionally drove off the road, according to the sheriff's office.

GIBSONTON, Fla. β€” A burglary suspect was arrested for trying to run over deputies with his car while fleeing a crime scene, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

It happened just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday near Nundy Avenue and 41 Highway South in Gibsonton.

Deputies requested backup from the K9 unit to arrest 25-year-old Dylan Airhart on occupied burglary and felony theft charges. But before they could arrest him, deputies said Airhart fled the scene in his car.

After deputies deployed stop sticks in his path, Airhart "intentionally drove off the road in an attempt to run over our deputies," the sheriff's office wrote.

The Florida Highway Patrol, which was called in to assist, successfully completed a PIT maneuver, causing the car to flip onto its side.

Aerial video shows a small SUV driving out of a plaza and later veering off the road. Troopers can then be seen completing the PIT maneuver, sending the car off the road where it rolled multiple times before coming to a stop.

Airhart and his passenger, 20-year-old Victoria Ramey, were arrested.

Airhart is facing multiple charges, including five counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon. Ramey was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of five or more IDs of other people.

"I am incredibly grateful that no one was injured in this dangerous situation. The suspect's reckless attempts to run over our deputies were horrifying and unacceptable, and we will not tolerate these types of actions," Sheriff Chad Chronister said.

No deputies or FHP troopers were injured in the chase.
