'Grossly above the speed limit': Driver accused of going up to 150 mph across Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Florida Highway Patrol troopers say they clocked the man going between 140-150 mph in a 65-mph zone.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol troopers arrested a man accused of going more than 75 mph over the speed limit while crossing the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on Wednesday, a trooper reported seeing a black BMW sedan "traveling grossly above the speed limit" while going southbound across the Skyway near the north rest area, an arrest report reads.

The driver, identified as 24-year-old Omar Lewis of Sarasota, was clocked speeding between 140-150 mph in a 65 mph zone, his arrest report goes on to say.

Lewis is accused of speeding around other drivers, including a fuel tanker truck, "with no regard for their safety."

Another trooper also eventually saw the car speeding, and together, they were able to pull the driver over on the south side of the bridge. Two other people were inside the car, and, according to the arrest report, Lewis told troopers he was trying to get them home in time for work in the morning.

Lewis was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor reckless driving. Drugs or alcohol were not said to be a factor.
