Organizers and law enforcement urge safety first ahead of Aquapalooza

More than 500 boats and other watercraft are expected to anchor in the New Pass Sandbar in Sarasota for the music event.

SARASOTA, Fla. — Many people will be out on the water for months to come especially this Memorial Day Holiday weekend.

One of the big attractions for boaters in Sarasota is Aquapalooza. Organizers say they're expecting more than 500 boats to anchor in the New Pass Sandbar for the event which is taking place not too far off from the Ken Thompson Park on Lido Key.

"Aquapalooza is a huge on-the-water party that we throw every year. We do it Memorial Day Weekend so it stays consistent," said Jason LeFevre, General Manager at MarineMax Sarasota.

For the last 10 years, the event has kicked off the summer season in Sarasota with live music and prize giveaways. The free event welcomes all types of boaters including folks on jet skis, kayakers and even paddleboarders.

"We just want to have a good time on the water. Sarasota has an unbelievable environment. We have a great sandbar out here. We have great music so it's going to be awesome," LeFevre said.

Some local businesses hope it draws in large numbers of tourists to usher in the high peak season. Some of them are also looking to help folks who don't have boats or know anyone with a boat so they too can take part in the fun and not feel left out.

"We take care of all you need so you can just enjoy your time. We have drinks for sale on board. You can bring whatever food or snacks that you like we were we really want you to just come back and relax with us. Let us do the hard work that takes you out on the water," said Taylor Eason with High Tide Tiki Boat Tours, Sarasota.

Authorities say while revelry is part of this weekend's fun, they still want you to also party safe and smart while out on the water. The U.S. Coast Guard has urged people should to follow safety precautions and plan properly especially if they are boating.

"We always recommend that you have a float plan with either family or friends and explain where you're going, how long you intend to be there what time you plan on coming back and then if there are any changes made to that and notify that for your family," said Chief Petty Officer Derek Waters with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Waters also warned that people who are operating a water vessel should not be drinking and should make sure their vessel is fitted with a kill switch.

"Have all of your jackets, make sure you have your fire extinguisher, you have your flares, your throwables and be safe and have a good time. We definitely don't want it to get out of control that's not our intention," LeFevre said.

Various law enforcement agencies are patrolling all over the Tampa Bay area on land and water. This includes Sarasota Sheriff's deputies, Sarasota Police and the U.S Coast Guard who will be conducting random boat checks.

Aquapalooza is happening on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and while it is free, registration is still required.

Officials are also reminding folks not to litter and to take any trash with them to dispose of them properly when they get back on land and help protect the environment and wildlife.
