SAN DIEGO — The East Tennessee State Men’s Golf team had a not-so-warm welcome during their arrival at San Diego International Airport on Tuesday night.
The video was shared with CBS 8 and posted to the team’s social media account appeared to show bag handlers throwing large luggage that contained golf clubs and equipment onto a cart.
The East Tennessee State Men’s Golf team captured the video as the athletes waited to deboard their Delta flight.
“It's one of those things that happen,” East Tennessee State Athletic Director Dr. Richard Sander told CBS 8.
"We’re really trying to make sure our guys are focused on their reason for being out there which is to win the national championship,” Sander told CBS 8. “ It’s a really good golf team we have and we wanna focus on that.”
The East Tennessee Bucs are in San Diego County this week for the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship that is being hosted at Omnia La Costa Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad.
Sander told CBS 8 that some equipment was damaged, including some personal items belonging to the players. He said Delta has been responsive and assisting the team with their needs after the airline became aware of the video.
"We apologize to the ETSU Golf team and ask for a mulligan on how their equipment was handled. We're in direct contact with the Bucs to ensure they have what they need to successfully compete in the NCAAs,” Delta said in a statement to CBS 8.
The social media post went viral, garnering nearly five million views on Wednesday.
People sounded off on X, with one user saying, “Why don’t they move the trailer closer so it’s a one-step process?”
The NCAA Division 1 Men’s Golf Championship takes place this weekend in Carlsbad from May 24- May 29.
