ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — After years of working in construction, Frank Strunk III tapped into his creative side. Strunk took what he learned about welding, shaping and molding metals together into the world of art. "It wasn't intentional. I picked up a lot of hand skills," Strunk shared.
Frank Strunk III is a self-taught American artist who specializes in metal sculptures. His workspace is located on the cusp of St. Petersburg and Gulfport. With several hundred followers on Facebook and Instagram, Strunk said social media only shows and tells part of his story.
Below the surface of posts, pictures and comments are moments of loneliness. "People don't know that the majority of an artist's day is just creating. Those days can stack up," he said.
When it's time to break away from the studio to socialize, Strunk explained that the feeling of loneliness vanishes. But he said there's a twist when an artist steps out of creative isolation. "You go from zero to 100," he said explaining that mingling for just a couple of hours can be draining.
These days, Strunk, who is 55, is focused on longevity and staying connected to the reasons why he became an artist. "My best work is still in me," he said. "Connection to the source is really the only thing that is truly important to career artists. You have to stay close enough to know it and feel like it knows you."
