LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. — You might find some “snakes in the grass,” but not this snake.

A Lee County Sheriff’s deputy rescued a snake coiled up in a car’s engine bay this week in Lehigh Acres, according to a sheriff’s office Facebook post.

Video shows Lee County Sheriff’s Sergeant Van Pelt, who is also a state-licensed python contractor, wrangling a small red rat snake found in the engine bay of what seems to be a silver Infiniti in a driveway.

The person who first reported the snake to deputies thought it was a 15-to-20-foot python, according to the post.

Even though deputies are unsure how long the snake was, red rat snakes usually are between 30-48 inches long, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Pelt released the snake into the nearest wooded area. It was unharmed, officials said.
