Consumer Reports: Best Salsas

Salsa is now king of condiments. Whether you use it as a dip or a food topper, Consumer Reports found several that can spice things up.

Salsa has become the king of condiments, outselling barbecue sauce, mustard, and even ketchup. Sales of salsa topped a whopping $700 million last year. With an average of 100 new salsas hitting the market each year, it's tough to know which are the tastiest. With the help of self-described salsa aficionados and trained sensory panelists, Consumer Reports recently tested 50 different types of salsa and found some very good picks. If you're looking for a salsa with unusual ingredients, Consumer Reports found three that rated Very Good: Desert Pepper Trading Company Two Olive Roasted Garlic is made with green and black olives; Green Mountain Gringo has a cumin flavor and is sweeter than the others; and Guiltless Gourmet Southwestern Grill has corn, carrots, and a chile-pepper flavor. Any of these would make a good choice the next time you're in the mood for salsa. Two other salsas received Ratings of Very Good from Consumer Reports, but you won't find them on your store shelves. Jardine's 7J Ranch Campfire Roasted salsa is available by calling 800-554-1880, and Joe T. Garcia's Salsa Picante can be found online at www.joets.com.
