BAD LUCK: Sheriff's K-9 finds drugs during training session in jail parking lot

The Hernando sheriff's office's K-9 unit found marijuana in a vehicle belonging to someone visiting the jail.

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. -- A K-9 training session turned into an actual arrest Tuesday afternoon.

The Hernando K-9 unit and a special response team were conducting training in the parking lot of the Brooksville jail on Spring Hill Drive and were allowing the K9s to walk around vehicles in the visitation parking lot.

As he was walking through the parking lot, K-9 Valor alerted deputies to the possibility of drugs in a vehicle. Deputies said they figured out the vehicle belonged to Valerie Howard, 20, who was inside the visitation area at the time. Howard confirmed that it was her vehicle and allowed deputies to conduct a search.

Deputies said they found a grinder and a small amount of marijuana inside the vehicle. Howard was arrested on possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges.

Her bond was set at $2,000.
