Hit-and-run crash kills Alabama man in Lakeland, deputies say

​The Polk County Sheriff's Office says the driver responsible may be in a silver 2010-14 Dodge Caravan or Chrysler Town & Country van.

LAKELAND, Fla. — A man visiting his family in Florida is dead after a deadly hit-and-run crash, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

In a social media post on X, the agency said the crash happened around 9:43 p.m. Sunday in the area of 10th Street North and Wabash Avenue.

The driver was reportedly traveling east on 10th Street when they struck a 58-year-old man visiting from Alabama. The man was hit from behind as he was standing or walking along the side of the road, the sheriff's office said.

The 58-year-old died at the scene, and his family has been notified.

The sheriff's office said the driver responsible may be in a silver 2010-14 Dodge Caravan or Chrysler Town & Country van.
