Tampa - A former Florida Metropolitan University student sued the school Monday, claiming she took out 37-thousand dollars in loans to finance her education there only to later find out she couldn’t transfer her credits to another university. Adrienne L. Travis sued the university and its parent companies Rhodes Colleges and Corinthian Colleges of Santa Ana, California. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages of more than 15-thousand dollars. Florida Metropolitan University officials at the Brandon campus did not return a telephone call for comment Monday. FMU’s website said it is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools to award degrees. Travis began attending the Brandon campus, about 12 miles outside Tampa, in May 2000 seeking an associate of arts degree in criminal justice. She was scheduled to graduate in May 2003 and intended on seeking a Bachelor of Science degree. Her attorney says at the time she enrolled, the school told her it was seeking accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. But she learned in October that the school had dropped its plans to seek accreditation from the association.
