ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The St. Petersburg Police Department is warning residents of a scam where fliers are left on their doors telling residents to call their banks.

Police are calling it a paper version of a phishing email scam. Residents are tricked into providing their account numbers upon calling the number left on the flier. The fliers are written in both English and Spanish, police said.

Authorities ask for residents not to call the number on the flier, but instead to call your bank.

The police department does not know of anyone who has lost money yet. Police said banks do not leave hand-written notices to residents.

Police ask for anyone who lost money by calling the number on the flier to call authorities at (727)893-7780.
