Bob's Boathouse neighbors happy its closed

Neighbors are happy Bob's Boathouse has closed after a year of complaints about noise and lights.
Bob's Boathouse in Sarasota is no longer on business after complaints about noise and lights.

Sarasota, Florida -- The Marquis at Bob's Boathouse along South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota changes with each day's special, but when customers drive in they find an empty parking lot and this sign that says, "closed today."

"It hasn't been here that long," says Wayne Hathaway, an almost-new customer.

Bob's opened just 14 months ago, but in that time, Bob's did not make friends with its neighbors across Phillippi Creek.

"It got so bad the inside of your house was rattled," says homeowner Carol Thomas. Her complaint is one of 40 complaints the county received about noise and bright lights at night during the first few months of the restaurant opening in October 2013.

"It was horrible, it was a nightmare. Everybody wanted to move and sell their house," Thomas says.

Fourteen months later, a supplier is picking up equipment.

The supplier with Terry Supply Company said, "As far as I know it closed down. Permanently."

Since its closure, Thomas says life along the creek has been much better.

"Life along the creek has been great nice, quiet, tranquil. That's why we moved here in the first place," she says.

All the complaints about Bob's forced Sarasota County to toughen its noise ordinance last spring and how it issues businesses a certificate of occupancy.

Still, complaints about Bob's continued this year. The Sarasota Sheriff's Office responded to six calls this year and deputies issued a warning last month.

Signs showed up on light poles saying Bob's doesn't pay employees.

On Feb. 12, Bob's Facebook told customers it's temporarily closed due to unexpected circumstances.

"Life is back to normal all of us residents here," Thomas says.

But for how long?

Thomas says Bob's lease is up in September.

Will the restaurant open again?

No one really knows.

10 News' calls to the restaurant owner's attorney were not returned. The property owner would not comment.

"We're just holding our breath until then," Thomas says.
