Deputies: 4 arrested for late-night street racing in Tampa

Video shows cars racing around each other and fireworks going off.

TAMPA, Fla. — Four people were arrested after deputies encountered a chaotic scene with multiple cars racing and lighting up fireworks early on Sunday morning.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of street racing just before 1 a.m. in the area of Cragmont Drive and Princess Palm Avenue.

In a video from the sheriff's office, you can hear multiple car engines revving, tires squealing and see smoke in the area. You can also see multi-colored fireworks going off.

Four people who were in a 2022 Dodge Challenger were arrested for participating in the event, which they traveled to from Lee County.

Inside the car, deputies found Roman candles and video recording equipment. A 2006 Chrysler 300 was also seized after its drivers and passengers took off on foot, according to a news release.

"Street racing is not only illegal but also incredibly dangerous, those who choose to engage in illegal activities here will face the inevitable consequences," said Sheriff Chad Chronister.

Two men and two women ages 20-22 were arrested. They were each charged with one misdemeanor for participating in the street racing, according to court records.
