Huge construction project upsets South Tampa residents

TAMPA, FL -- It's a construction nightmare for many in the South Tampa area.

The project meant to solve flooding has turned into a headache for people who live and work nearby.

“Our neighbors woke up one day and a port-o-potty was in their front lawn,” said Marissa Bergman, who lives within eyeshot of the massive construction zone.

“I have two small children, so I’m a little bit nervous.”

Bergman lives off of West Vasconia Street. The construction near her home is a city project meant to alleviate flooding problems in the South Tampa area.

But, it’s creating a temporary new problem -- a bunch of drivers detouring and flying down residential streets.

Now, you’ll see signs all over telling them to slow down.

“They had officers at the corner of Hubert and El Prado and Bay to Bay and Hubert and it seemed to really help,” Bergman said.

Another problem with the construction is that it’s located smack-dab in the middle of a business district.

Some of the owners feel like the road closure signs deter potential shoppers. After a complaint, the city did step in and add “Businesses are Open” signs.

“That was really really wonderful,” said Cheri Hudson.

Hudson owns Imagine That, a woman’s clothing boutique. She said the city has been helpful with trying to steer traffic in the right direction, but it’s still a challenge.

“The people who are driving by and who can look in the window and go, ‘Oh, look at that dress’ or you know, ‘Oh my God, my husband made me mad today, I’m gonna go in and buy stuff at that store real quick,’'” she said.

“I’m losing out on those people and I’m sure it’s at least $20,000 plus.”

A spokeswoman for the project said customers can park in safe road closure areas. They also provide a ride to anyone who has to park within walking distance.

As for the speeding, she said TPD officers have been out trying to flow cars through better areas.

Homeowners are happy something is at least being done about the flooding problem.

“Hopefully there’s a means to an end,” Bergman added.
