2 girls escape same Pasco County youth detention facility just weeks apart

One of the girls has been found, but the other has not.

LAND O' LAKES, Fla. -- Pasco County deputies say two teen girls escaped the same youth detention facility within a month of each other.

The first escape happened in mid-October, while the most recent one was first reported this week.

Deputies say the girls, ages 15 and 16, vanished separately from the Wilson Youth Academy, which is located a half mile north of State Road 54 in Land O' Lakes.

The older girl was located Monday morning in Lakeland, but the younger one -- who disappeared first -- is still missing.

Asked about the escapes, Pasco County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Kevin Doll said he didn't know why the girls were originally in custody.

"I do not have a contact for anyone at the Academy," Doll explained. "I was not made aware if any juvenile poses a threat to the public. I do not know what crimes they committed to be placed at the Academy."

10News does not typically identify minors. At this point, authorities have not given any reason to believe that the girl who is still missing is a danger to the public. So, we are not naming her at this time.

We called the juvenile facility for comment. This story will be updated if we hear back.
