12-year-old girl arrested for Instagram messages threatening school shooting

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 12-year-old girl was arrested Friday after sending Instagram messages threatening a school shooting, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say the girl sent messages to two other students about conducting a shooting at Azalea Middle School in St. Petersburg.

When deputies met with the girl and her mother, she reportedly admitted to sending the messages but said she was not serious about the threats. 

The 12-year-old was arrested and charged with written threats to kill or conduct a mass shooting. She was transported to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center.

"The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office remains committed to keeping our schools, our children, and our community safe," deputies wrote in a news release.
