Fatal crash leaves 2 people dead, US 19 closed for hours

Troopers say a man hit a car that was stopped for traffic, resulting in a chain-reaction crash.

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Two people were killed in a five-car crash late Saturday that left a stretch of U.S. Highway 19 closed for four hours.

The crash happened around 10:35 p.m. in the northbound lanes just south of Republic Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say a car, driven by a 50-year-old man from Largo, failed to stop for four other cars that were stopped for traffic. He crashed into the back of another car, which was pushed forward and hit three others.

A passenger inside the car, a 54-year-old woman from Clearwater, died from her injuries. So, too, did the 50-year-old, as stated by Florida troopers. The only minor injury reported was to the driver of the car that was hit.

The northbound lanes of U.S. 19 were closed until about 2 a.m. on Sunday.
