ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) - The first female mayor of St. Petersburg has died.

Corinne Freeman died Sunday at age 87. Her son Stephen tells The Tampa Bay Times that Freeman had been working five days a week as a stockbroker before she retired six weeks ago.

Freeman served as mayor from 1977 to 1985. During her tenure, she helped secure the land where Tropicana Field would later be built. She also pushed to develop downtown St. Petersburg.

After she left office, Freeman spent 10 years on the Pinellas County School Board. She then became a stockbroker at the age of 62.
