This new roundabout in Lakeland plans to alleviate long-standing traffic woes

Those traveling between Lake Beulah and George Jenkins Boulevard/Bonnet Springs Park may not worry too much about leaving the house late.

LAKELAND, Fla. — A new roundabout is now ready for Lakeland commuters Monday after half a year of construction, according to a recent City of Lakeland news release.

The Five Points Roundabout project is now completed 94 days ahead of schedule, which is set to better connect commuters to the Downtown West area.

West Main Street, West Lemon Street and Sloan Avenue were closed during the construction but have since been reopened as a single-lane roundabout in the middle of the intersection, the release said.

“The primary reason for the project is to increase intersection capacity and specifically to eliminate vehicles from backing into George Jenkins Boulevard (SR 600) when waiting at the intersection traffic signal,” civil engineer manager Ryan Lazenby said in a statement last year.

“Once completed the roundabout will reduce intersection delays, improve safety, and serve as a gateway feature to the Downtown West area,” he added.

The city originally announced back in October 2023 that the multi-million-dollar project would take about nine months to complete rather than just over six months, according to a previous release.
