Restaurants closed down due to health code violations in May

Health inspectors have been extra busy, shutting down 12 restaurants across the greater Tampa Bay area so far in the month of May.

TAMPA, Florida— Health inspectors have been extra busy, shutting down 12 restaurants across the greater Tampa Bay area so far in the month of May.

The establishments included:

PACIFIC THAI CUISINE -- 4058 TAMPA RD STE-5, OLDSMAR

This establishment was shut down May 15th with 18 violations, 7 of which were high priority. The heath inspector reported finding live roaches crawling across the beer bottles and throughout the kitchen, along with grease accumulated on the floor, temperature violations on chicken found at 76 degrees, and an employee not properly washing their hands. The restaurant was cleared to reopen the following day. (View Full Inspection History)

NOSH CAFÉ -- 4058 TAMPA RD #4, OLDSMAR

On May 15th an inspector ordered an emergency closure, citing the restaurant for 17 violations including more than 20 live roaches found under the sandwich presser, inside the reach-in cooler, and under the Pepsi soda machine. The inspector also found a black or green mold-like substance inside the ice machine (repeat violation), and food stored on the floor. More roaches were discovered on a follow-up inspection May 16th before the restaurant was cleared to reopen on the 18th. (View Full Inspection History)

EL RINCON PERUANO -- 8502 N ARMENIA AVE, TAMPA

This Latin and Peruvian restaurant was ordered to temporarily close May 14th with 21 violations. The inspector found no soap or paper towels at the hand washing sink, temperature violations on the salsa (63F), cut tomatoes (64F), beef (69F), beans (59F), shrimp (56F), and fish (56F), along with aproximatly 14 live roaches crawling across the beer bottles and throughout the kitchen. SAVVY JACK'S SOUTHERN GOURMET -- 11401 N 56 STREET STE 22, TEMPLE TERRACE

This establishment was shut down as an emergency closure on May 12th after an inspector discovered around 15 live roaches crawling around the kitchen. More dead roaches were found in a trap above the prep/plating station. The inspector also cited the restaurant after finding a black or green mold-like substance inside the ice machine, and found the manager lacked the required food manager certification to be running the kitchen. FUSHIA ASIAN BISTRO -- 15317 AMBERLY DR, TAMPA

This Chinese restaurant was closed down May 12th with 17 violations including small flying insects in the kitchen, live roaches on top of the dish machine, under the reach-in cooler and near the hood fire suppression system, along with slime around the soda dispensing nozzles. TAQUERIA LA COSTENA -- 1915 E FLETCHER AVE. TAMPA

This mobile food unit was ordered to stop serving food May 12th with 15 violations including a stop sale on the raw beef and sausage. The inspector also reported finding live roaches throughout the kitchen including approximately 6 by the refrigerator, approximately 3 on top of reach in cooler, approximately 5 on the cook line, 2 by service window, approximately 5 on a wall by the AC unit, and approximately 5 on prep table. TANGO DELI -- 1712 MISSOURI AVE. LARGO

A health inspector ordered this Argentinian restaurant to close on May 12th with 7 violations including a live roach crawling through the soap dispenser and another 4 live roaches found in a stack of napkins. The restaurant was also cited for storing food on the floor and not properly date marking their lasagna. The restaurant was cleared to reopen on May 15th with only 1 remaining basic violation. OASIS ON THE BOULEVARD -- 250 APOLLO BEACH BLVD,

APOLLO BEACH

This popular restaurant and karaoke bar was shut down for several days beginning May 8th. A health inspector wrote up the restaurant with 36 violations including live roaches and roach excrement found all over the kitchen, including both dead and live roaches found near food in the reach in cooler. The inspector ordered close to 15 pounds of food in that refrigerator be thrown out due to the roach issue. The restaurant failed a follow-up inspection on May 9th with more live roaches and temperature violations on the raw chicken 45°f, raw beef 45°f and cheese 46°f. THE GRAND SIAM LOUNGE -- 2325 ULMERTON RD #28, CLEARWATER

This repeat offender is popular during the lunchtime rush but was closed down for the second time in two years, this time with 39 violations. On May 7th the inspector documented no soap or paper towels at a hand washing sink, live roaches in the bar area, along the cook line and underneath a table in the servers area. On a follow-up inspection more roaches were found May 8th inside the sushi bar. The restaurant was cleared to reopen later that day with zero remaining violations. (View Full Inspection History)

GULF COAST PO' BOYS -- 312 WEST BAY DRIVE, LARGO

The state health inspector found this establishment was operating with a license expired for more than 60 days. The establishment was also written up for a total of 10 violations including an employee who failed to wash their hands before putting on gloves to work with food, and live roaches including on shelving near food and dry goods. The inspector reported finding 5 live roaches breading under the prep table. The restaurant was cleared to reopen May 7th but will still require a follow-up inspection. TGI FRIDAYS #785 -- 2501 E FOWLER AVE, TAMPA

This restaurant near the University of South Florida Tampa campus was shut down May 1st with 11 violations including around 16 live roaches found throughout the kitchen including behind the reach-in cooler. The restaurant was also cited for having standing water and accumulated grease on the floor in the kitchen, both issues known to attract cockroaches. CAPTAIN BRIAN'S SEAFOOD MARKET -- 8421 N TAMIAMI TRL, SARASOTA

A state health inspector ordered an emergency closure of this establishment on May 7th with 5 violations including temperature violations on the potato salad and coleslaw at 48°F. The inspector also reported finding 3 live roaches on the rear prep table near food processor, 4 live roaches in electric outlet on a wall above the rear prep table, 20 live roaches along pipes below the dish machine and roach excrement and/or droppings present around faucet handles at rear prep table.
