One person dies after reportedly being struck by lightning in Sarasota

According to a news release, Sarasota deputies responded to the incident on the beach located in the 600 block of Midnight Pass Road.

SARASOTA, Fla. -- A 33-year-old Seffner man is dead following a lightning strike on a Sarasota beach Sunday, according to officials.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office identified James W. Barton as the man killed.

According to a news release, Sarasota deputies responded to the incident on the beach in the 600 block of Midnight Pass Road.

First responders and beach lifeguards worked to assist the person before they were sent to a nearby hospital. That's where Barton was pronounced dead.

An investigation into Barton's death is ongoing.
