Sarasota homeowner shoots man breaking into house

Deputies believe the 28-year-old suspect tried to enter a man's home and was shot in self-defense.

SARASOTA, Fla. -- A homeowner shot at a man breaking into his house moments after being told to get out, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

James Jarvis, 28, spent time at a bar before leaving sometime after 1 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, deputies say. About an hour later, he tried to get inside a house in the area of 2800 Mayflower St.

It wasn't long before the homeowner confronted Jarvis and told him to leave, a news release states.

Jarvis refused and was shot. Deputies say the homeowner fired his weapon in self-defense.
