A shooting and search for the gunman in Lakeland put four schools on a heightened security alert on Tuesday.
The schools were Southwest Elementary, Southwest Middle, Dixieland Elementary and Blake Academy. There are no security concerns on the campuses.
About 11:13 a.m., a shooting in the 900 block of Marietta Street was reported to Lakeland police. The suspect, wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts, fled the scene before police arrived.
A K-9 and Polk County Sheriff's Office helicopter joined the search and officers secured a five-block area. The search lasted two hours.
Zachary Anton McCray, 23, was suffering from several gunshot wounds when he arrived at Lakeland Regional Health emergency room. His condition is not known.
