UF Study says manatee tears could offer clues

University of Florida researchers say manatee tears could tell them something about the sea mammal's health.

GAINESVILLE, Florida (AP) -- University of Florida researchers say manatee tears could tell them something about the sea mammal's health.Researchers are using the thick, mucuslike tears that cover the eyes of manatees to find out more about the mammal's health. This leads to less traumatic exams and a better idea on how to save the gentle animal. Mammals have a film covering their eyes for protection, but UF researchers say the manatee's is unusually thick. The scientists think the thickness offers increased levels of antibodies. A preliminary state report shows that over 200 manatees have died in Florida so far this year, while about 35-hundred manatees roam in and around Florida waters. They're still listed as endangered, which means the sea mammals are at risk for becoming extinct in at least a significant portion of its habitat.
