Quinn Glen Cooper, 18, of Roseburg.

Quinn Cooper had just graduated from Roseburg High School in June. Thursday was his fourth day of college.

"Quinn was funny, sweet, compassionate and such a wonderful, loving person. He always stood up for people," his family said in a statement.

Cooper loved dancing, voice acting and martial arts, his family said. He and his brother Cody were inseparable.

"I don't know how we are going to move forward in our lives without Quinn. Our lives are shattered beyond repair. We send our condolences to all the families who have been so tragically affected by this deranged gunman. No one should ever have to feel the pain we are feeling," the family statement said.

Lucas Eibel, 18, of Roseburg.

Lucas Eibel's family said he loved volunteering at Wildlife Safari and the Saving Grace animal shelter. He also loved the time he spent with the Future Farmers of America. He was studying chemistry at UCC, where he was awarded a scholars award. He was "amazing soccer player," his family said.

"We have been trying to figure out how to tell everyone how amazing Lucas was, but that would take 18 years," a family statement said.

Memorial donations in Eibel's name can be made to the Roseburg High School FFA and to the injured victims, his family said.

Jason Johnson recently enrolled at UCC, his family said in a statement.

NBC News talked with Johnson's mother. Tonja Johnson Engel said her son had struggled with drug abuse but completed a six-month rehab program and was excited to turn his life around.

"The other day he looked at me and hugged me and said, 'Mom, how long have you been waiting for one of your kids to go to college?' And I said, 'Oh, about 20 years,'" Engel recalled.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin also clarified Friday that nine people were injured in the shooting.

Authorities said the male shooter was killed in a shootout with police shortly around 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

During a press conference Friday morning, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) said his cousin was among the dead.

"One of the individuals that died is the great granddaughter of my first cousin, so she is my cousin. And I just tell you, it -- every heart is damaged and broken," he said, visibly upset.

Merkley grew up in the area and said family members on his mother's side and his father's side still reside in Douglas County.

Four of the injured patients were treated at Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg and one remains in critical condition at that hospital. Another is in fair condition.

Three women who were critically hurt were airlifted to PeaceHealth Medical Center in Springfield. One woman was shot in the head and a bullet entered the left side of her brain, according to Dr. Scott Russi of PeaceHealth. She will likely have lasting neurological damage.

Another victim who tried to diffuse the situation was shot seven times. Chris Mintz, 30, an Army veteran, walked towards the gunman and tried to talk him out of shooting more people, according to witnesses. A GoFundMe account to pay for Mintz's medical bills has raised nearly $300,000.
