Outgoing Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has endorsed the city's former police chief Jane Castor to be his successor.

Castor will face retired businessman David Straz in the April 23 runoff because no candidate reached the 50-percent threshold in Tuesday's election.

“Jane Castor won a convincing victory last night. She is the best candidate to finish the work of the last 8 years and take Tampa to the next level,” Buckhorn said of his decision. “She is tested, she is prepared and she is ready to be our Mayor. There’s not a neighborhood she doesn’t know and challenge she isn’t ready to face. I am proud to endorse Jane Castor as your next Mayor.”

Accepting the endorsement, Castor praised Buckhorn's time in office.

"Mayor Buckhorn leaves a tremendous legacy, and I am so honored to earn his confidence and endorsement. Tampa is on a trajectory of success, in large part thanks to his leadership," Castor said. "Our city needs a proven leader who can keep our momentum going and make sure every family and every neighborhood thrives. I would be honored to take the baton and work every day to make Tampa as great as it can be."
