'Pregnant man' living in Arizona

In 2008, Oprah Winfrey introduced Thomas Beatie to the world as the first legally recognized pregnant man in the U.S.
KPNX 12 News, Beatie spoon-fed pureed vegetables to his one year-old son Jensen and discussed his family's move to Arizona last year."We really like our neighborhood, it's the suburbs. So far our neighbors have been really warm and accepting," Beatie said.In 2008, Oprah Winfrey introduced Beatie to the world as the first legally recognized pregnant man in the U.S. Thomas grew up as Tracy, a biological female. He underwent sex re-assignment surgery and legally became a man.Beatie gave birth to his daughter Susan, now 3 years-old. He later gave birth to two sons, in 2009 and 2010."At one point I felt there was something missing from my life, and I've had that void filled now. I feel like a full person. I can have a family, be a husband and father," Thomas said.Last year, Thomas and his wife Nancy moved from Oregon to Arizona in order to be closer to relatives. The couple spend their days in the Valley shuttling kids to preschool and spending time together. Thomas is often hired for speaking engagements around the world and Nancy works as a personal trainer. Nancy took hormone pills in order to breast feed their children. She jokes that the hormones caused her to gain weight and that she has since "lost Thomas' baby weight."Thomas and Nancy say they enjoyed relative anonymity while living in Arizona in recent months but they are slowly opening up about Thomas' "past-life" with local residents."I'm an activist at heart. People need to know we have a happy, healthy transgender family," Thomas said.The couple discussed their background with administrators at their children's pre-school. Recently, the family also attended a Halloween block party where Thomas was recognized by some neighbors from previous media appearances."I had people coming up talking to me, saying I didn't get the story before. I had my own opinions about it. Getting to talk to you I'm glad I got to do that because you're just a normal person," Beatie said.Thomas says he feels a sense of purpose to let other transgendered individuals know they are not alone. That sense of mission is reinforced by his heritage. Thomas proudly displays a detailed diagram of a family tree in his home office. It maps out generations of ancestors on his mother's side of the family and includes two U.S. presidents.According to the genealogical map, President William Henry Harrison is Thomas' fifth great grandfather. President Benjamin Harrison his 3rd great uncle. Thomas notes that they were Republicans. "But that's alright," he said, laughing."I do feel like I represent America, the diversity of America, part of me inside is fighting for that as well," he said./>
