President Donald Trump says he wants to end birthright citizenship

The president says the current law is 'ridiculous' and has to end.

In a new interview, President Donald Trump says he is considering trying to end birthright citizenship for the children of non-American citizens.

That would mean children born in the United States, whose parents are not citizens, would not automatically gain citizenship, as they do now.

"We're the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a baby and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits," the President said in an exclusive interview for a new four-part documentary series premiering this weekend on HBO.

The series, called 'Axios on HBO' will debut at 6:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday.

In a preview, the president said he has thought about trying to abolish birthright citizenship by executive order.

The controversial move would be one of the most significant developments in the president's crackdown on illegal immigration. It would also create a constitutional debate because the 14th Amendment protects birthright citizenship.

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside," it says.

President Trump has been considering such action since at least 2016, according to a policy paper released at the time.
