Kissimmee airboat crash

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Eight people were hurt Friday morning when an airboat hit a sandbar in central Florida, according to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.

The crash happened in a canal near Partin Triangle Park in Kissimmee, Osceola County Fire Rescue officials said. The boat had 11 people on board, and eight were transported to local hospitals. Fire officials said there were no trauma alerts.

"I can't speak to what the specific injuries were, but I can tell you that the eight transports we had were not trauma transport, so they would've just been standard transports to the hospital. So no significant immediate life-threatening injuries," Joshua Holder, a spokesperson for Osceola County Fire Rescue, said.

Everyone on board had life-saving devices, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies said passengers called 911 asking for help getting their boat off a sandbar.

All passengers were eventually brought back to shore by another boat.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are investigating the crash because it involved a commercial airboat.

"You know, every rescue has its own challenges. We're just fortunate that we were able to get here quickly enough to be able to assess, triage, and transport the patients as soon as possible," Holder added.

Just two months ago, an airboat flipped in the Florida Everglades, sending passengers into the alligator-filled waters. The passengers told CBS Miami that the driver was attempting to make a U-turn after seeing an alligator.

Just one person suffered minor injuries in the Everglades crash. The airboat operator was later arrested.
