Verizon cell service restored in Florida

Widespread outages of Verizon cell service was reported by customers from Pensacola to Miami earlier Tuesday evening. The communications company says the outage has been repaired.

The website downdetector.com has a heat map of the outages spanning the entire state. The outages began around 5:00 p.m. and continued until around 8:35 p.m.

Hundreds of customers posted on the Verizon Wireless Facebook and Twitter sites complaining of an outage that has lasted hours.

Across the state of Florida, Verizon Wireless customers couldn't make make phone calls for two and a half hours, the telecommunications company said.

A Verizon spokesperson said in an email that the outage was repaired by engineers at 7:40 p.m.

Below is the full statement:

"Verizon Wireless experienced an interruption in voice service for some customers throughout Florida today. The outage lasted approximately 2.5 hours. Engineers were able to identify and resolve the issue promptly and service was restored by 7:40 p.m. EST."
