St. Petersburg, Florida -- Several 10 News viewers have contacted the station looking for health inspection reports from some of their favorite places to eat. Reports for major chains like Wawa, Starbucks, and Krispy Kreme are missing from the main state database listing most other food service establishments.
The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation inspects an estimated 48,000 food service establishments every year, including food trucks, some bars and even vending machines.
But not every establishment gets a visit from DBPR. A select group of businesses including gas stations, convenience stores, doughnut and coffee shops are inspected by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The agency is also in charge of inspections for raw meat products, dairy products, water bottling plants and supermarkets.
The Agriculture and Consumer Services inspections are very similar to those conducted by DBPR with violations posted on the agency's website for public review.
A third state agency, the Florida Department of Health also does inspect some food establishments, mainly limited to establishments which serve highly susceptible populations such as those in school cafeterias and some nursing homes.
