Eyes in the sky: Here's when you can expect to stargaze at the next full moon

The next full moon, which occurs in May, is called the flower moon.

FLORIDA, USA — There have already been four full moons in 2024 following Tuesday night's "pink moon" taking to the sky.

So now it begs the question, when is the next full moon taking place?

According to NASA, spectators can enjoy the "flower moon" at 9:53 a.m. on Thursday, May 23.

The name of the moon comes from blooms that appear across North America during the month.

Various tribes have given different names to May's full moon, such as the "frog moon" due to the amphibians getting more active during this time.

Here are the other dates stargazers can expect to take a look at a full moon:

  • Strawberry moon; 9:08 p.m. Friday, June 21
  • Buck moon; 6:17 a.m. Sunday, July 21
  • Sturgeon moon; 2:26 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19
  • Harvest moon; 10:34 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17
  • Hunter's moon; 7:26 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17
  • Beaver moon; 4:29 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15
  • Cold moon; 4:02 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15

A full moon reportedly happens roughly every 29.5 days.

Technically, it takes 27.3 days for the moon to complete an orbit around the earth. However, because both are spinning around the sun, the moon has changed position enough that the sun hits it at a different angle on day 27.

Based on the amount of days, this means there's one full moon every month. But occasionally, the timing can work out so that there's a full moon at the beginning of the month and one at the end. That second full moon is known as a blue moon.
