3-car crash blocks traffic on Sunshine Skyway Bridge

One driver was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A three-car crash on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge blocked traffic for hours Saturday morning.

It happened around 6:10 a.m. in the northbound lanes on the Manatee County side of the span, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Law enforcement reopened the lanes just before 8:30 a.m.

Troopers said the three vehicles, including a Ford Ranger truck, were heading north when one driver told law enforcement she swerved to avoid debris on the road. That maneuver caused her car to hit the back of the truck.

The truck rotated, crashed into the barrier wall and ended up on its roof, FHP said. The driver of the third car was unable to stop and hit the back of the overturned truck.

Neither of the car drivers was hurt, troopers said, but the truck driver was taken to an area hospital for a non-life-threatening injury.

The truck's fuel tank ruptured in the crash, and firefighters responded to the scene to contain spilled fuel, FHP said.

Southbound traffic on Interstate 275 of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge remained free-flowing as crews dealt with the crash in the northbound lanes.

Traffic cameras alongside the interstate earlier showed cars backed up to the south rest area.
