TAMPA, Fla. — Floridians have just under a year to make sure their ID is "real." We're talking about the Real ID Act, set to go into effect on May 7, 2025.

You may be wondering — didn't we already pass the deadline for getting a Real ID?

Several years ago, in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, federal transportation officials pushed back the original due date to Oct. 1, 2021.

But then it was delayed again as the pandemic raged on, this time until 2025.

Between now and May 7, 2025, you can go to your local DMV and get a Real ID. Keep in mind, you may already have a Real ID if you live in Florida.

Real ID — what is it?

The Real ID Act was passed by Congress nearly 20 years ago, enacting recommendations from the 9/11 Commission that the federal government should have "standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses."

The Real ID Act set up minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards. The act also prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting licenses and IDs that don't meet those standards.

If an ID isn't up to federal standards, it can affect people's access to certain federal facilities, boarding a commercial flight and entering nuclear power plants.

How can I tell if I have a Real ID?

Florida started issuing Real ID-compliant credentials in January 2010, so chances are you likely already have one. To make sure, check the upper right corner of your driver's license.

If your license has a yellow and white star in that corner, you have a Real ID. You can get additional information here

Can I travel internationally with just a Real ID?

No. While you will need a Real ID to board a domestic flight in the U.S. after May 7, 2025, that requirement doesn't extend to international flights or other forms of travel.

Your Real ID is regulated by the federal government. To travel internationally, you still need a passport.
