Southwest Airlines keeps canceling flights: How to check yours

In a statement earlier Monday, Tampa International Airport said it was continuing to see cancellations, though "there has been some improvement."

TAMPA, Fla. — Southwest Airlines canceled hundreds more flights Monday following a weekend of major service disruptions.

According to FlightAware, the carrier canceled at least 348 flights Monday and delayed another 303 flights.

The Dallas-based airline had blamed air traffic control issues and weather for its weekend “operational challenges” that saw more than 1,000 canceled flights on Sunday alone.

Southwest Airlines was the only airline to report the issues on that scale.

In a statement Monday morning, Tampa International Airport said it was continuing to see cancellations, though "there has been some improvement."

"As of now, we have 8 scheduled Southwest flights that are canceled today," the statement read.

Southwest Airlines issued a statement via its Twitter account on Friday afternoon, citing Air Traffic Control issues for the "high volume of cancellations."

On top of the Southwest cancellations, TPA had several weekend flights canceled on other airlines including Allegiant, Spirit, and American Airlines, apparently due to a separate issue.

The airport wrote in a tweet Friday afternoon "an FAA-imposed air traffic management program in response to bad weather to the north" was to blame for the flight issues across multiple airlines. TPA added in a tweet reply to a user that Southwest Airlines was "dealing with nationwide cancellations unrelated to this instance."

The Federal Aviation Administration wrote in a tweet on Sunday that the "widespread severe weather" delays were compounded with "military training and limited staffing in one area of the Jacksonville en route center."

As of Monday afternoon, Tampa International Airport's website still features a travel advisory banner reading, "TPA is continuing to see a high number of delays and cancelations, particularly with Southwest Airlines flights. Please check with your airline for updates."

You can check your status for flights flying in and out of TPA on the airport's website here.

Southwest Airlines told 10 Tampa Bay on Sunday that "Employees at TPA and elsewhere are working individually with our Customers on their delayed travel."

In a new statement Monday afternoon, the company said, in part, "Southwest Teams have been working diligently to restore stability to the network, and we are experiencing less disruptions on Monday. We hope to restore our full schedule as soon as possible.

"As a note, the operational challenges were not a result of Southwest Employee demonstrations, as some outlets are reporting."

The company added it "offers our sincerest regret regarding disrupted travel plans, and we look forward to a future opportunity to demonstrate our safe, reliable, friendly, and legendary Southwest Hospitality – something that Customers should always expect from Southwest Airlines."
