How focusing on the buzzer helped 'Jeopardy! James' win millions

How one Jeopardy! champion discovered the secret to buzzing in at the right time

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — It is safe to say, Fritz Holznagel is among the elite group of 'Jeopardy!' champions. Holznagel answered enough questions and wagered enough money to win the 'Tournament of Champions' in 1995. Holznagel was invited back in 2014 to play in the 'Jeopardy! Battle of the Decades Tournament.'

Before facing his competitors, Holznagel prepared by learning the art of clicking the buzzer at the right time.

“I realized, at that time I wasn’t going to know more than anyone else on the show,” Holznagel said during a FaceTime interview with 10News. “I figured I needed an edge. So, I started to study buzzing and reaction time.”

After learning all about buzzing and reacting, Holznagel wrote and published the e-book, Secrets to the Buzzer.

That same book helped James Holzhauer buzz his way to win $2,382,580 in 31 days. “He has been very generous and mentioning that he read the book,” Holznagel said. “He actually used the secrets when he buzzed. It seemed to work out for him.”

In an interview with ESPN, Holzhauer said he practiced his buzzing techniques with the help of the e-book, Secrets to the Buzzer.

Holznagel is a firm believer that James would have been successful with or without the book. “His betting strategy was really innovative, his way of hunting for the daily double and betting big on them.”

After James Holzhauer gave props to Secrets to the Buzzer, Fritz said his e-book sales picked up. “I would say that James has tripled the sales of my book.”

Secrets to the Buzzer was published in 2014 and only sold about 100 copies within the last five years. “It’s really gratifying to have put something out there, and to find out that it was useful to somebody else and have other people reading it is great.”
