Miles for Moffitt raises nearly $1.6M for cancer research

Donations still are being accepted.

TAMPA, Fla. — Runners and walkers of all ages hit the pavement for the 18th annual Miles for Moffitt event Saturday morning, pushing toward a big goal of raising big money for cancer research.

Close to $1.6 million has been donated so far, 10 Tampa Bay's Nick Volturo reported earlier in the day — surpassing the goal of $1.5 million posted on the event's website. That amount is expected to continue rising once all the money has been counted.

The Miles for Moffitt celebration and run is based at Amalie Arena’s Ford Thunder Alley. Nearly 10,000 people attended this year's event, Volturo reported.

Several events took place, including a 1K fun run/walk, 5K and 10K races and more.

"Miles for Moffitt is Tampa Bay’s premier community-wide movement of courage and hope, raising funds for life-saving cancer research which is at the core of Moffitt’s mission," Moffitt Cance Center wrote on its website. "Since 2006, Miles for Moffitt has raised millions of dollars toward advancing cancer research, helping Moffitt sustain and advance its status as one of the best cancer centers in the country and the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Florida."
