BRANDON, Fla. — A 16-year-old is facing a second-degree murder charge after deputies say he was involved in the shooting death of a 14-year-old girl earlier this month.
In the early morning hours of June 18, deputies said the girl was shot inside a vehicle near the intersection of Kingsway Road and East Clay Avenue in Brandon. The vehicle then drove about two miles to a Walgreens parking lot before someone called 911.
During a Wednesday morning news conference, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said the 16-year-old suspect is a "certified gang member."
Chronister said the suspect is a member of a "loosely organized gang" operating out of Town 'N' Country. The sheriff said the teen suspect had "beef" with another person in the vehicle, and the 14-year-old was not the intended target.
The sheriff said the suspect was the only person who fired shots.
