Elmo’s wellness check uncovers existential dread and despair on social media

Elmo has sparked a national conversation about the importance of mental health checkups on friends, family and co-workers.

NEW YORK — A simple question from Elmo has led to a national conversation on mental health.

"Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?" Elmo asked on Monday on the social platform X.

Elmo's question received tens of thousands of responses as the internet shared their trauma with the "Sesame Street" star.

"Every morning, I cannot wait to go back to sleep. Every Monday, I cannot wait for Friday to come. Every single day and every single week for life," wrote one person.

"Elmo we are tired," said another.

"I’m at my lowest. Thanks for asking."

"It's been a tough time since we left the street and entered the workforce, Elmo."

"Elmo I’m suffering from existential dread over here."

After 24 hours, Elmo had to respond as thousands continued to their share pain, grief and despair.

"Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will check in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you.❤️ #EmotionalWellBeing," Elmo posted on Tuesday.

Elmo's posts have launched a national conversation about the importance of mental health checkups on friends, family and co-workers.

President Joe Biden even responded to Elmo Tuesday night.

"I know how hard it is some days to sweep the clouds away and get to sunnier days," Biden shared on X.

"Our friend Elmo is right: We have to be there for each other, offer our help to a neighbor in need, and above all else, ask for help when we need it. Even though it's hard, you're never alone."

Other "Sesame Street" residents responded to Elmo, offering their support and sharing the importance of emotional wellbeing. Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster, Grover, Snuffleupagus, and Abby Cadabby were among those offering to lend a shoulder and ear.

"I’m here if you ever need a shoulder to lean on. I’ll make us both a warm cup of tea," said Bert.

"If you ever need some cheering up, let me know! I love making others smile," Ernie wrote.

"I, Grover, am here to be a good listener whenever you need it!"

"Me here to talk it out whenever you want. Me will also supply cookies," said Cookie Monster.

"I’m not great at listening to others share their big feelings, but my worm Slimey is. You should talk with him if you ever need to chat," wrote Oscar the Grouch.

"I love being a Snuffleupagus because I have huge ears that are made to listen to you share your feelings," said Snuffleupagus.
