Clearwater cracks down on speeding, reckless motorcycles

Several bikers were caught during a crackdown on U.S. 19 and the Courtney Campbell Causeway.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Clearwater police spent part of the weekend putting the brakes on speeding and reckless motorcyclists.

Officials said they arrested several bikers during a crackdown on U.S. 19 and the Courtney Campbell Causeway.

Officers reportedly caught drivers going as fast as 135 mph.

"We see the bumper stickers all the time that say, 'Look Twice, Save A Life, Motorcycles Are Everywhere.'" police said. "When you are operating a motorcycle at 123 mph or 135 mph, it's hard for others to look twice and save a life when the speed is so ridiculous."

In addition to speeding, the motorcyclists faced other charges including reckless driving, fleeing and eluding and various drug and alcohol-related offenses.

Police said they will be doing more of these details in the future.

"Our goal is simple -- to make our streets and highways safer for everyone, including the motorcyclists," police said. "Our roads are not race tracks."
