ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Humans apparently aren't the only ones with feelings in the animal kingdom.
The Sea Through Canoe company tweeted a video of what appeared to be a mother dolphin pushing her dead calf through the Intracoastal Waterway.
As the tweet mentions, it's not known what exactly caused the young dolphin's death. David Yates, the chief executive officer at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, said they became are aware of the situation.
"[It's] very sad but this happens," Yates said. "The calf is clearly deceased (we do not know why) and we won’t approach retrieval of the carcass until the mom releases it.
"This is standard protocol."
Earlier this year, officials in New Zealand spotted a grief-stricken bottlenose dolphin who was carrying around a deceased calf on its back. In 2016, another dolphin was seen doing the same in the Mediterranean Sea.
Grief, as Science Magazine noted in a 2018 story, is a reaction to the permanent severing of a strong social or family bond -- and humans might not be the only species that experience the emotion.
