Man dead after Tampa mosque shooting

There is no threat to the public, the sheriff’s office said.

TAMPA, Fla. — One man is dead after a shooting early this morning at a mosque, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the homicide at the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay Mosque at 7326 Sligh Avenue East.

There is no threat to the public, the sheriff’s office said.

The suspected shooter is in custody and is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed against the suspected shooter as of 5 a.m. ET Monday.

The sheriff's office has not identified either man.

Detectives believe the victim and the suspect knew each other. Both men were attending prayer services at the mosque, the sheriff's office said.

First responders took the man who was shot to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An off-deputy deputy heard gunshots just after midnight coming from the parking lot of the mosque, the sheriff's office said. The deputy saw one man holding a gun and another with at least two gunshot wounds.

The investigation is ongoing.
