A South Carolina woman waiting for an Uber ride got into a car over the weekend. That was the last time she was seen alive.
The case of 21-year-old Samantha Josephson has brought attention to safety when using ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft.
Here are some tips offered by the services:
- Plan ahead: Think about where you're going, and review the safety features in the app so you know how to use them.
- Tell your friends: Let someone know you're taking a ride, where you're going and when you're expecting to be there. You can even share your location.
- Request your ride inside: Reduce the amount of time you spend outside alone. Wait for your driver inside.
- Get in the right car: Check the license plate, driver photo and name before getting in the car. Always ask the driver who they are there to pick up: they should know since the information is in the app. Never get into a car with a driver who says they're with a service and offers a lift.
- Ride in the backseat: If you're by yourself, ride in the back. It's easier to get out if there's an emergency.
- Protect your personal info: The app makes the information anonymous for both rider and driver. There's no reason to share it in person.
- Use your intuition: If you have a bad feeling about a ride, don't get in.
- Report problems: Both Uber and Lyft have links to report safety issues.
