A Tampa man has filed a lawsuit after receiving an “onslaught” of promotional text messages in hopes of winning tickets to see the Tampa Bay Lightning play the Boston Bruins.
The class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of Bryan Hanley claims he received several texts from the Lightning.
Court documents show Hanley responded to team promo by texting the word “parent” to the team “for a chance to win 4 tickets” to the game on Dec. 6, 2018. The suit claims Hanley received a barrage of texts with ticket offers and other promos.
According to the lawsuit, Hanley was afraid to text the word “stop” to end the texts from “bombarding his cell phone,” but he was afraid [to] do so because he feared it might prevent him from winning tickets to the Lightning vs. Bruins hockey game.”
Hanley claims he still received texts after he did not win the contest to the Dec. 6 game. He eventually did text the word “stop” to the team to opt out of the texts on Dec. 14, 2018.
Miami-based Carey Rodriguez O'Keefe Milian Gonya, LLP filed the suit on March 5, 2019, on Hanley’s behalf. The suit seeks up to $2,000 in damages, plus attorneys’ fees.
